A number of makers have also produced double neck basses with an 8-string bass neck (double courses, tuned in octaves like a 12-string guitar) on top and a 4-string bass neck on the bottom. Double neck basses with various other combinations exist, such as 4-string/6-string and 4-string/5-string.
Until guitarist Jimmie Webster first popularized his Illustrated Touch System in 1952, [1] all guitars had been strummed. But with Webster's single-neck touch-style guitar and then Dave Bunker's headless, [2] [3] double-neck, DuoLectar touch guitar, these new instruments, while appearing similar to traditional strummed guitars, [4] actually employed an innovative tapping technique.

A model with a 4-string bass and a 6-string guitar neck was called the EBS-1250; it had a built-in fuzztone and was produced from 1962 to 1968 and again from 1977 to 1978. [ 4 ] In 1963, the solid-body EDS-1275 was designed, resembling the SG model ; this version of the doubleneck was available until 1968. [ 5 ]
Charlie Whitney of Family was known for playing a double-neck Gibson EDS-1275. Carl Wilson (The Beach Boys) used an ES-335. Custom made in 1962, it has blonde finish and gold hardware with a Bigsby B-7 tremolo. In 1983 the original guitar neck was broken and replaced with a neck from an ES-355.
While most touring professional pedal steel guitarists tend to either carry a double neck guitar (D-10 with E9 and C6 tunings) on the road, many have found that a single neck 10 string pedal steel guitar with the E9 tuning is enough for their needs. Pat Townshend designed the magnesium alloy guitar called, "The Staccato." The final guitar design featured a neck and bridge system that could be swapped out. The user could interchange a bass neck for a six string neck. Some models featured no volume or tone pots. The user could activate the volume controls on a touch sensitive LED pad.
