University Grants Commission (UGC; ISO: Viśvavidyālaya Anudāna Āyōga) is a statutory body under Department of Higher Education, Ministry of Education, Government of India. It was set up in accordance to the UGC Act 1956 [ 2 ] and is charged with coordination, determination and maintenance of standards of higher education in India.
Private universities are established by an Act of a State Legislative Assembly and approved by the UGC. As of 14 November 2023, the UGC consolidated list of universities lists 455 state private universities. [10] As of 14 November 2023, these four types of universities total 1114 universities together.
The Department of Hindi, established in 1963, is one of the oldest departments of the university. It was originally part of Kerala University but moved to the University of Cochin in 1971. It is the only department in South India with Department Research Support (DRS) and Department Special Assistance (DSA) programmes in Hindi supported by UGC.
In many cases, the same listing by the UGC covers several institutes. For example, the listing for Homi Bhabha National Institute covers the Institute of Mathematical Sciences, the Indira Gandhi Centre for Atomic Research and other institutes. [99]

Deemed university, or "Deemed-to-be-University", is a status of autonomy granted by the Department of Higher Education on the advice of the UGC, under Section 3 of UGC Act, 1956. [9] [10] Private universities are approved by the UGC. They can grant degrees but they are not allowed to have off-campus affiliated colleges. [11] [12]
As of August 2011, UGC recognizes fifteen state universities in Madhya Pradesh, [3] of which eleven universities receive financial assistance from central government and UGC in addition to Madhya Pradesh state government.
