The British patrol manning the checkpoint returned fire. There were no injuries on either side.

The Battle of Newry Road was a running gun battle between British Army helicopters and Provisional Irish Republican Army (IRA) armed trucks, fought along the lanes east of Crossmaglen, County Armagh, on 23 September 1993.
Newry is a civil parish in County Armagh and County Down, Northern Ireland. It is situated in the historic baronies of Iveagh Upper, Lower Half (one townland ) and Lordship of Newry in County Down and the baronies of Orior Upper and Oneilland West (two townlands) in County Armagh.
