Australian costume designer Lizzy Gardiner wore a dress made of 254 American Express Gold cards to the 67th Academy Awards on 27 March 1995, where she won the Best Costume Design award for her work on the 1994 film The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert. All of the cards were authentic, but had expired.
A replica of Gardiner’s iconic dress, created by the designer and American Express, even found its way to the auction block at Christie’s for a charity auction, where it fetched $12,650.
Lizzy Gardiner (born 1966 [citation needed]) is an Australian costume designer, who has been working in Hollywood since the early 1990s. Noted for her originality, she is best known for her American Express gold card dress which she wore to collect her Academy Award for Best Costume Designer at the 67th Academy Awards in 1995 for her work on The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert.
