The character was called Rerun as a sobriquet because he continuously repeated all of his classes during summer school. Rerun became one of the show's top characters, wearing a trademark red beret and suspenders while sporting the dance moves that Berry previously used during his time with The Lockers.
Mabel King finally left the show (her character moved to Phoenix, Arizona, to tend to a sick relative), and Shirley moved into the Thomas household as a boarder and Dee's guardian. After the first successful season, Fred Berry attempted to negotiate a higher salary than his co-stars based on what he perceived as the popularity of the "Rerun" character. Having caused similar issues during the production of the original series, which led to its cancellation, producers fired Berry from the series.
Rerun was a minor character in the strip when he was introduced in 1972, and in the 1980s he mostly appeared in sequences riding on the back of his mother's bicycle. However, in the late 1990s — the final years of the strip — he became a major presence, as Schulz felt that his main cast was "too old" for some of the themes he wanted to explore.
