This car was the result of a design program that started after the death of Dale Earnhardt in the 2001 Daytona 500. It was intended to offer improvements in safety, performance, competition, and cost efficiency.
NASCAR's new Car of Tomorrow (or COT) has led to a boom in testing at the track, and many teams used the track for testing the new cars when it was announced the car would be used in 2007. In the runup to the COT's debut, Michael Waltrip Racing , Gillett Evernham Motorsports , Yates Racing , and Roush Fenway Racing tested their COTs at the track.
