Simmons University (previously Simmons College) is a private university in Boston, Massachusetts. It was established in 1899 by clothing manufacturer John Simmons. In 2018, it reorganized its structure and changed its name to a university. Its undergraduate program is women-focused while its graduate programs are co-educational.

Hardin–Simmons University was founded as Abilene Baptist College in 1891 by the Sweetwater Baptist Association and a group of cattlemen and pastors who sought to bring Christian higher education to the Southwest. The purpose of the school would be "to lead students to Christ, teach them of Christ, and train them for Christ."
Simmons University continued to grow and prosper. In 1894, Simmons was succeeded by Charles L. Purce, [4] who was president until his death in 1905. [5] In 1907, the school, now called State University at Louisville entered into an affiliation agreement with the Louisville National Medical College to merge the two colleges. [6]
