The village of Somerset was established in 1810 by settlers from Somerset, Pennsylvania at the spot on Zane's Trace located midway between Lancaster and Zanesville. [2]: 1138 Seven years later, parts of Fairfield, Muskingum, and Washington counties were merged to create Perry County, and the house of a Somerset resident was named the first temporary courthouse.

As early as the nineteenth century, three of the founding congregations had established academies for the education of children and young women: St. Catharine's Academy, Kentucky 1822; St. Mary's Academy, Somerset, Ohio, 1830; St. Agnes Academy, Memphis, Tennessee 1851, (founded by sisters from Kentucky and Ohio); and St. Mary's, New Orleans, 1860.
