EL 1007 was the first diesel rail crane used in New Zealand (originally No. 197 pre-TMS). It was built in 1943 by Ransomes & Rapier, and is currently stored at the Weka Pass Railway. Two 60 tonne Cowan Sheldon diesel rail cranes were built in 1979, after an initial tender in 1976.

A jetboat is a boat propelled by a jet of water ejected from the back of the craft. In the late 1940s, NZR was looking for a more powerful type of diesel shunting locomotive to work in the Wellington railway yards. They had trialled a number of T R class shunting locomotives, none at the time were suitable with the most powerful being the five T R class 0-4-0DM shunting locomotives which produced 153 horsepower.
The NZR RM class Midland railcar (or Leyland diesel railcar) was the first successful railcar, and first diesel-powered vehicle, to enter revenue service in New Zealand. [ 2 ] [ 3 ] Two were built, RM 20 and RM 21, and they ran for five years from 1936 to 1941 before being replaced by larger Vulcan railcars .
