East Moriches (/ m oʊ ˈ r ɪ tʃ ɪ z / ⓘ moh-RITCH-iz) [2] is a hamlet and census-designated place in the Town of Brookhaven, Suffolk County, New York, United States near the south coast of Long Island. The population was 5,249 at the 2010 census. [3] The name Moriches comes from Meritces, a Native American who owned land on Moriches Neck. [4]

East Moriches station was originally built in 1897, and throughout much of its history has existed as a flag stop which has served more freight than passengers. The station agency closed in 1932, and burned on September 22, 1936. [ 1 ]
