The company was founded by ANA, Japan Airlines and TOA Domestic as Nippon Kinkyori Airways [3] (日本近距離航空, Nippon Kinkyori Kōkū, lit. Japan Short-Distance Airline, NKK [3]) in March 1974 and started operations on 10 October 1974.
Air Japan was established as World Air Network on June 29, 1990, and became the charter airline arm of All Nippon Airways (ANA), but suspended operations in September 1995. On July 5, 2000, World Air Network was renamed Air Japan, and began operating services under the ANA brand.
Nippon Cargo Airlines was established on September 21, 1978 (its head office was initially a single room inside All Nippon Airways' space at the Kasumigaseki Building [3]) and started operations in 1985. It was Japan's first all-cargo airline. [2]
