St. Mary of the Angels parish was organized in 1899 by Rev. Vincent Barzynski, CR, pastor of St. Stanislaus Kostka, Chicago's oldest Polish parish. The parish was founded to serve the large number of Poles who had settled in Bucktown, which was a part of Chicago's Polish Downtown. [4]
Founded in 1902, St. Benedict School in 1950 expanded to include a high school. In February 2017 St. Benedict Preparatory School announced it would be closing its high school. The last graduating class was in June 2019. [1] St. Benedict Preparatory will continue its mission to serve families with Pre-Kindergarten through Grade 8 children.
In 1837, Saint Cyr retired as pastor of St. Mary and was replaced by Reverend James O'Meara. He moved St. Mary to another wooden structure at Wabash Avenue and Madison Street. When O'Meara left Chicago, Saint Palais demolished the wooden church and replaced it with a brick structure. [11]
