On September 8, 1912, "Texas Cyclone" Eddie Hasha was killed at a motordrome in Newark, New Jersey in an accident which also killed another racer and four spectators, and injured ten more. The deaths made the front page of The New York Times , [ 29 ] and the press started calling the short 1/4 and 1/3 mile circuits "murderdromes". [ 18 ]
