Nymphaea nouchali, often known by its synonym Nymphaea stellata, or by common names blue lotus, [3] star lotus, red water lily, dwarf aquarium lily, blue water lily, blue star water lily or manel flower, is a water lily of genus Nymphaea. It is native to southern and eastern parts of Asia, and is the national flower of Bangladesh and Sri Lanka.
Aquatic plants are used to give the freshwater aquarium a natural appearance, oxygenate the water, absorb ammonia, and provide habitat for fish, especially fry (babies) and for invertebrates. Some aquarium fish and invertebrates also eat live plants. Hobbyists use aquatic plants for aquascaping, of several aesthetic styles.
Barclaya longifolia is a submerged, perennial, aquatic herb [3] with ovoid, tuberous, stoloniferous, 2-3 cm long, and 0.5-1.5 cm wide rhizomes. [4] The linear-lanceolate, 12-30 cm long and 2-5 cm wide leaves with an obtuse apex, and a cordate base have an undulate margin. [5]
Species of Nymphoides are sold as aquarium plants, including the "banana plant", N. aquatica and the "water snowflake", N. indica. Species native to the United States are N. cordata in the northeast and N. aquatica in the southeast. Nymphoides peltata is native to Europe and Asia, but can be found in the United States as an invasive aquatic weed.
The hairy water lily is an aquatic plant having erect perennial rhizomes or rootstocks that anchor it to the mud in the bottom. The rhizomes produce slender stolons . Its leave blades are round above the water and heart-shaped below 15–26(–50) cm, papery, abaxially densely pubescent.
Nymphaea lotus is often used as a freshwater aquarium plant. In ornamental garden pools and in greenhouse culture, it is grown for its flowers, which do not normally appear under aquarium conditions. Aquarists prefer to trim the floating lily pads and just maintain the underwater foliage.
