Democrats 66 (Dutch: Democraten 66; [a] D66) is a social liberal [4] [5] and progressive [6] [7] political party in the Netherlands, which is positioned in the centre of the political spectrum. The 1979 European election was the first direct election to the European Parliament to be held and hence the first time the Netherlands had voted. Four parties won seats: the conservative liberal People's Party for Freedom and Democracy (VVD), the progressive liberal Democrats 66 (D66), the Christian-democratic Christian Democratic Appeal (CDA) and the social-democratic Labour Party.

The Young Democrats (Dutch: Jonge Democraten; JD) is a social-liberal youth organisation in the Netherlands, founded in 1984. Although independent, it is affiliated with the social-liberal Democrats 66 party. With over 5,000 members, it is the largest political youth organisation of the Netherlands. [2]
