Southwest Texas State Normal School [4] first fielded a football team in 1904. [5] Oscar W. Strahan, for whom the current basketball arena is named, was hired as the university's first director of athletics, and served as the team's first head football coach from 1919 to 1934. [6]
Several sources have it as September 12, 1940, [3] [18] but in an oral interview with Texas State University history professor Dan K. Utley, Davis confirmed the first performance date as September 19, 1940, [19] as does the book, A History of Kilgore College, 1935-1981.
In the 2013 and 2014 seasons, competing at the highest level of the National Collegiate Athletic Association, the team recorded just a single victory. Average attendance last year was among the 10 worst in the NCAA’s top level. Yet Georgia State’s 32,000 students are still required to cover much of the costs.
