The Globe Theatre, originally the Morosco Theatre, and Garland Building, is an office building and theater at 744 S. Broadway in the Broadway Theater District of the Historic Core of Downtown Los Angeles. It opened in 1913, has 11 stories, and was designed in Beaux-Arts architectural style by the firm of Morgan, Walls & Morgan.
John Orrell (December 31, 1934 – September 16, 2003) was a British author, theatre historian, and English professor at the University of Alberta.The New York Times described him as the "historian whose intellectual detective work laid the groundwork for the 1997 re-creation of Shakespeare’s original Globe Theater."
A modern reconstruction of the theatre, named "Shakespeare's Globe", opened in 1997, with a production of Henry V. It is an academic approximation of the original design, based on available evidence of the 1599 and 1614 buildings, [30] and is located approximately 750 feet (230 m) from the site of the original theatre. [2]
A new Globe theatre was eventually built according to a design based on the research of historical adviser John Orrell. [ 4 ] It was Wanamaker's wish that the new building recreate the Globe as it existed during most of Shakespeare's time there; that is, the 1599 building rather than its 1614 replacement. [ 5 ]
The SGC (Shakespeare Globe Zentrum Deutschland) was founded in 1991 after Sam Wanamaker experienced the Bremer Shakespeare Company's productions of The Taming of the Shrew and Antony and Cleopatra at the Globe Theatre in Neuss and directed by the company's co-founder Norbert Kentrup.
