Newtown and Llanllwchaiarn Urban District was abolished under the Local Government Act 1972, becoming part of the Montgomery district of Powys on 1 April 1974. A new community was created covering the former urban district, with its council taking the name Newtown and Llanllwchaiarn Town Council, also known as Newtown Town Council. [12]
The ward elected two councillors to Montgomeryshire District Council [2] and Powys County Council, but since the May 1999 election it elected one county councillor to Powys County Council. [3] Newtown Central is a community ward and is represented by three town councillors on Newtown and Llanllwchaiarn Town Council. [4]
Newtown lies about 8 miles (13 km) from the Wales-England border, in the narrow valley of the River Severn, which restricts development north and south of the town. It is surrounded by small villages, often referred to collectively as the Newtown area. The Newtown post town area, including the villages, has a population approaching 16,000.

Llanllwchaiarn or Llanllwchaearn (Welsh: [ɬanɬuː′χaɨarn]) in Welsh) is a village on the outskirts of Newtown in Powys, Wales. It forms part of the community of Newtown and Llanllwchaiarn . Aberbechan Hall was a Tudor mansion in the eastern part of the parish demolished in 1870.
The A489, officially known as the Newtown to Machynlleth Trunk Road in Wales, is a trunk road in the United Kingdom running from Craven Arms, Shropshire to Machynlleth, Powys and crossing the Wales-England border. The road starts about one mile north of Craven Arms.
