    The japanese version has them as the Yamikuro, a made-up word, meant to imply darkness and lurking. The translator chose to call them INKlings for a similar reason and at one point explains the INK stands for Infra Nocturnal Kappa. This is however exclusive to the english translation, not mentioned anywhere in the Japanese.
