The following is the list of critically endangered (CR) and endangered (EN) species included in the National List of Threatened Terrestrial Fauna of the Philippines as per DENR Administrative Order 2019-09. [1] The list below currently does not include fauna classified as vulnerable (VU) and other threatened species (OTS).
This is a list of threatened plant and animal species in the Philippines as classified by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN). It includes vulnerable (VU), endangered (EN), critically endangered (CR), and recently extinct (EX) species. It excludes near threatened (NT), data deficient (DD), and prehistoric species. [1]
The Philippine guitarfish, known formally as Rhinobatos whitei, is a critically endangered species of cartilaginous fish in the genus Rhinobatos. [2] [3] [4] The species has been documented in the Pacific Ocean near the Philippines. [5]
There are 67 globally threatened species, including the rufous hornbill and the critically endangered national bird of the Philippines, the Philippine eagle or monkey-eating eagle. Until 1995, the national bird of the Philippines was the maya (which, in the Philippines, refers to a variety of small, commonly observed passerine bird).
Cartilaginous fishes include sharks, rays, skates, and shovelnose rays. The majority of the order Rhinopristiformes, which includes sawfish, guitarfish, wedgefish, and other shovelnose rays, is considered critically endangered, with 28 of its 64 evaluated species considered critically endangered by the IUCN.
The Philippines lies within the Coral Triangle, and one area, the Verde Island Passage, has the world's highest recorded diversity of marine species. [5]: 8 Reef fish provide between 15 and 30% of municipal fisheries catch, [6]: 65 with some islands relying on reefs for as much as 70% of their catch.
Endangered (EN) species are considered to be facing a very high risk of extinction in the wild. In September 2016, the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) listed 643 endangered fish species. [1] Of all evaluated fish species, 4.2% are listed as endangered. The IUCN also lists ten fish subspecies as endangered.
Of all evaluated fish species, 3.6% are listed as near threatened. The IUCN also lists seven fish subspecies as near threatened. Of the subpopulations of fish evaluated by the IUCN, ten species subpopulations have been assessed as near threatened. This is a complete list of near threatened fish species and subspecies evaluated by the IUCN.
