The downtown district of Lockport was platted in 1836, the same year that construction began on the Illinois and Michigan Canal (I&M Canal). Two years later, Lockport was designated as the headquarters for the I&M. Due to the importance of the canal for commerce, the downtown district runs parallel to it.

The Mercer County Jail is a historic county jail building located at 309 South College Avenue in Aledo, Mercer County, Illinois. Completed in 1909, the building was the county's third jail and its second in Aledo. Architect Clair F. Drury of Moline designed the Tudor Revival building.

A post office was established at Lockport in 1838, and remained in operation until it was discontinued in 1904. [3] The birth of the town, and its name, are related to the set of lock gates that one would have encountered on the Wabash and Erie Canal. [4] [5]
