Beulah Park was Ohio's first thoroughbred racetrack and premier event center, offering live thoroughbred racing from October through to early May. The track also offered Quarter Horse racing on select days throughout the season, with the most notable races occurring in mid-October with three AQHA graded stakes.
The track races under the Ohio 7/7 Program which means that live racing is held at two locations in the state at the same time. During the summer Thistledown races seven races on a card and Belterra Park (formerly River Downs) races the other seven. In September, Beulah Park takes over for Belterra Park. The 2011 meet was also reduced to 85 days of racing due to flooding of the Ohio River. [3] The 2013 River Downs meet was moved to Beulah Park as the racing oval and grandstand were torn down to be relocated closer to the barn area. In October 2013, Pinnacle renamed River Downs as Belterra Park. [4]
Prior to the change, on May 21, 2005, Visa, Inc. officially withdrew its sponsorship of the Triple Crown, effective with the 2006 races; this relieved the company from paying the US$5,000,000 bonus to the owner of the horse that wins the Triple Crown. Sponsorship of the races was taken over by Triple Crown Productions in 2006.
The 2021 racing schedule features 17 stakes races, three (3) open stakes and ten (10) Ohio State bred stakes races. Fox Sports returned to horse racing in 2014 with a two-year agreement with The Jockey Club for up to 10 races on Fox Sports 1 and Fox Deportes. [6] In 2016, Fox Sports reached an agreement with the New York Racing Association (NYRA) for coverage of 40 summer races from Saratoga Race Course on Fox Sports 2.
