Five strings usually tuned B 0 –E 1 –A 1 –D 2 –G 2, providing extended lower range. The earliest commercial five-string bass was created by Fender in 1965. The Fender Bass V used the E–A–D–G–C tuning, but was unpopular and discontinued in 1970. This tenor tuning is still used by some jazz and soloing bassists.
In 1965, Fender introduced the first five-string bass guitar, the Fender Bass V, however unlike the modern 5 string, it had a high C instead of a low B, although, with the total number of frets on a Bass V being fifteen, the total range of the instrument was identical to a twenty-fret four string Fender bass.
The 5-string version was introduced in 2007. [citation needed] In 2008, Fender offered both the four- and five-string versions of the 24-fret Jazz Bass in a stealthy Flat Black finish (with matching headstocks and hardware). These 2-octave Jazz Basses were gone from the Fender pricelist as of 2009.
