Seems like iOS 17 on the iPhone broke the appletv remote app when connecting to Ethernet connected Apple TV units. Does anyone know of a workaround? AirPlay seems fine, it’s just the remote app that seems to be broken. EDIT: It seems that mDNS has changed for the AppleTV. They now use the service string: _companion-link._tcp.local.
Updated to iOS 18 today. If I'm watching a video on Apple TV, I get a persistent notification on my lock screen to bring up the Apple TV remote.
Accidentally bumping the mic/voice button on the remote instantly exits whatever app you're in and launches into the search screen in Apple TV. If you're lucky you can get back to what you were doing with a double-tap of the 'screen' looking button and a precision swipe over to the last app followed by an even more precise touch-pad press that ...
Thankfully, the new Apple TV remote is a million times better than the Siri remote - highly recommend. The buttons have a better tactile click, you can now disable the touch gestures (much appreciated) and the Siri hotkey is in a unique, better position.
What to me is weird with it also is there are some apps like Disney plus I have had very little issues with but then movies I have bought on Apple TV that just will not show the time properly. I have to Pause and then start the movie or tv show again for it to get the latest time but then still will not update while the movie or show is playing.
So I use the Apple Remote app via the control center. I have upgraded my Apple TVs to tvOS 17. For the first couple days everything worked fine. But now the tv/home button will not work at all. I have tried it with both Apple TVs I own, one is 4k gen 1 the other is a prior version. i have tried the app on 2 iPhones, 1 on Ios 17 and one on 16.6.
They could certainly do better, IYAM. My big issue, though, is when I’m floating through the channels - my remote (either TV or the Apple TV remote) will suddenly scroll the selection up or down dozens of channels without any interaction on my part. It’s like a ghost is playing with the remote. Frustrating.
Can confirm this works. I run an Apple TV 4K old model, to my Bose 700 Soundbar, then the Bose to the TV, all hdmi ports (in my setup) are arc/cec. It functions just fine for TV only, as the TV wakes the soundbar. And for Apple TV, I just use the Apple Remote to turn on the Apple TV, Soundbar and TV in one go.
I always used my phone to turn my tv on and control the volume of my sound bar with the native remote app (control center). Since iOS 16, it has been such a crap experience. It still works but not like it used to. Before ios16, if I pulled up the remote app on my phone it would stay active even when my phone went to sleep.
There are several Android apps on the Google Play Store that claim to be Apple TV remote controls. However most of them have ads and a lot of negative reviews saying they don't work. I tried one "Cider TV" and it did not work, it could not connect to the Apple TV at all. Some of the apps seem to require "IR Blaster" and my phone doesn't have that.
