The Roanoke River Correctional Institution was previously the Caledonia Correctional Institution, also known as the Caledonia State Prison Farm. The Western Correctional Center for Women was previously the Swannanoa Correctional Center for Women. The Granville Correctional Institution was previously the Polk Correctional Institution.
It is part of the Butner Federal Correctional Complex and is operated by the Federal Bureau of Prisons, a division of the United States Department of Justice. An adjacent satellite prison camp houses minimum-security male inmates. It is located in Mangum Township, [2] Durham County, North Carolina, [3] near Butner. [4]
Butner is located in southwestern Granville County. Interstate 85 passes through the town, southeast of the town center, with access from Exits 186, 189, and 191. I-85 leads northeast 16 miles (26 km) to Oxford, the Granville County seat, and southwest 13 miles (21 km) to Durham. Butner is bordered to the east by the city of Creedmoor.
