The Inn was built by Augustus Chase ("A.C.") Savage (1832–1911), grandson of Glaswegian John C. Savage (1756–1816), [2] who moved to the United States in 1770 and to Northeast Harbor in 1792. [3] In December 1966, a fire destroyed Wallace's Esso Garage, the Pastime Theater, the Hillcrest Market, and Mrs. Flye’s Sandwich Shop. [ 4 ]
SR 198 begins in the village of Northeast Harbor. It heads northward and has a concurrency with SR 3 from Northeast Harbor and intersects SR 233. Near Somesville, SR 3 ends but SR 198 turns north along the route of SR 102. SR 198 and SR 102 run together for four miles (6.4 km) and enter Bar Harbor. Both routes have their northern end at SR 3.
Around 1820, John Savage II (1801–1868), [4] son of John and Sarah Savage, 1798 settlers in Northeast Harbor, built a farmhouse on the site now occupied by the inn. Known as the Old House, [ 4 ] he lived there with his wife, Bath, Maine , native [ 5 ] Climena (1801–1884). [ 6 ]

State Route 3 (SR 3) is a 120.67-mile-long (194.20 km) state highway located in southern Maine. It is a major interregional highway, connecting the Interstate 95 corridor to the Atlantic coast . The western terminus is at SR 8 , SR 11 and SR 27 in Augusta and the eastern terminus is at SR 102 and SR 198 in Mount Desert .
