By 1998, Marlyatou Barry and Bokar were living in Arlington County, Virginia, near Washington, D.C. Using a statement from the All-African People's Revolutionary Party as a reference, Ture's 1998 obituary in The New York Times said he was survived by two sons, Bokar Biro Ture and Alpha Yaya Ture; three sisters; and his mother.
The family were supported by that of Guinean president Sekou Touré, who had befriended Miriam Makeba and Carmichael, until Touré's death in 1984. The following year, a pregnant Makeba went into premature labor, and died on 17 March 1985, aged 34, of complications after losing the unborn child.
The other brothers, Sir James Carmichael of Bonnytoun and Captain John Carmichael, were royalists and the former fought at the Battle of Dunbar (1650) while the latter was killed at Marston Moor where he must have opposed his brothers. Boubacar Barry (born 1943 in Guinea) is a Senegalese Professor of Modern and Contemporary History at the Cheikh Anta Diop University in Dakar. He was the recipient of the 2014 Distinguished Africanist Award of the African Studies Association , [ 1 ] and he was selected as the 2016 honorary member of the American Historical Association .

Bokar Biro Barry (or Boubacar Biro) (died 13 November 1896) was the last independent ruler of the Imamate of Futa Jallon in what is now Guinea. He died in the Battle of Porédaka , when his forces were destroyed by French artillery.
