The Murasaki Shikibu Nikki Emaki (紫式部日記絵巻) is a mid-13th century emaki (Japanese picture scroll) inspired by the private diary of Murasaki Shikibu, lady-in-waiting at the 10th–11th century Heian court and author of The Tale of Genji.
Over time, the character got associated to ribald humor, and by the time of Zen master Hakuin Ekaku she was identified as a prostitute, ugly but captivating at the same time. This portrayal came probably from the popular stereotype of the meshimori onna , also known as okame , and was used in Zen poetry to reflect the doctrine of nondualism .
The men-yoroi was constructed from iron, leather, or a combination of both. It had a lacquered or rusted type of finish and included a variety of facial details, such as a moustache, fierce teeth and a detachable nose. [5] [6] With the exception of the happuri, a men-yoroi had a small hole underneath the chin for sweat drainage.

Murasaki was unconventional because she lived in her father's household, most likely on Teramachi Street in Kyoto, with her younger brother Nobunori. Their mother died, perhaps in childbirth, when they were quite young. Murasaki had at least three half-siblings raised with their mothers; she was very close to one sister who died in her twenties.
This is not to be confused with the chinstrap beard—a similar style of beard that also grows along the jawline but does not fully cover the chin. In addition, many chin curtain beards do not extend far below the jawline, if at all, whereas chinstrap beards generally do. The Shenandoah tends to be somewhat longer than the chin curtain.

As a fashion for women, hikimayu lasted for a number of centuries afterwards. In Noh drama, which started in the 14th century, the masks for the roles of young women typically have eyebrows in the hikimayu style. Beginning in the Edo period (1603–1867), both hikimayu and ohaguro transitioned into a practice seen only on married women. [3]
