"Theme from Mahogany (Do You Know Where You're Going To)" is a song written by Michael Masser and Gerry Goffin and produced by Masser. It was initially recorded by American singer Thelma Houston in 1973, and then by Diana Ross as the theme to the 1975 Motown/Paramount film Mahogany that also starred Ross. [2]
Mahogany stars Diana Ross as Tracy Chambers, a struggling fashion design student who rises to become a popular fashion designer in Rome. It was released on October 8, 1975. The soundtrack included the single "Theme from Mahogany (Do You Know Where You're Going To)", which peaked at number-one on the Billboard Hot 100 chart in January 1976.
The song had actually been first recorded (also in 1975) by fellow Motown labelmate Thelma Houston as a planned single but was pulled before release. Diana Ross' version was released as the theme song for her 1975 film, Mahogany .
The final movie in Loveuary gives the Jane Austen classic 'Sense and Sensibility a Hallmark Mahogany twist.
Ross was also nominated for a Grammy for "Love Hangover" (Best R&B Performance, Female Artist), and an Academy Award for "Best Song" for "Theme from Mahogany (Do You Know Where You're Going To)", which Ross performed live via satellite from Amsterdam, the Netherlands, where it was still dark in the early morning hours.
The song received generally negative reviews from music critics. Vince Rick of HotNewHipHop stated in his review of Double or Nothing, "From the opening track, 'Go Legend', Big Sean and Metro Boomin live up to the album's name, staking it all on a sample of Diana Ross's 'Theme From Mahogany (Do You Know Where You're Going To)'.
