Flinders Council is a local government body in Tasmania, encompassing the Furneaux Group and nearby islands of Bass Strait, in the north-east of the state. Flinders is classified as a rural local government area and has a population of 987, [ 1 ] with Whitemark the main town located on Flinders Island .
Eventually in 1996, the Flinders Island Aboriginal Association and the Flinders Municipal Council signed an agreement to hand over the Wybalenna site to the Aboriginal community. In April 1999, the Premier of Tasmania formally transferred the title of the ‘Wybalenna Aboriginal Station Historic Site’ to the Flinders Island Aboriginal Community.

The Furneaux Group is a group of approximately 100 islands located at the eastern end of Bass Strait, between Victoria and Tasmania, Australia.The islands were named after British navigator Tobias Furneaux, who sighted the eastern side of these islands after leaving Adventure Bay in 1773 on his way to New Zealand to rejoin Captain James Cook. Flinders Island is an island that forms part of the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park at the tip of Cape Melville, Queensland in Bathurst Bay. The original indigenous name was Wurriima. [1] It is north of Denham Island in the Flinders Group National Park. It is separated from Stanley Island by Owen Channel and Maclear Island by Fly Channel.

Flinders Island is one of the islands included in the Investigator Islands Important Bird Area identified by BirdLife International, a non-statutory status, awarded in 2009 because of the island group's population of fairy tern (a vulnerable species), as well as significant populations of Cape Barren geese, Pacific gull and black-faced cormorant. Wingaroo is a rural locality in the local government area (LGA) of Flinders in the North-east LGA region of Tasmania. The locality is about 42 kilometres (26 mi) north of the town of Whitemark . The 2016 census recorded a population of nil for the state suburb of Wingaroo.
