Camp Buehring (formerly Camp Udairi) is a staging post for US troops in the northwestern region of Kuwait.From its founding in January 2003 to the present date, the base was used for military troops heading north into Iraq and is the primary location for the Middle Eastern Theater Reserve.

The battalions in Kuwait and Qatar transferred to the 402nd Army Field Support Brigade in 2010 to allow the 401st to focus on operations in Afghanistan. In 2015, the 401st moved their headquarters to Camp Arifjan, Kuwait, and reintegrated their battalions from Kuwait and Qatar to their command. The 402nd then redeployed back to Hawaii.

[2] Its cavalry and infantry predecessors operated in desert and metropolitan areas in 1919, 1920 and 1928 to 1938, tracing their roots directly to the cavalrymen and infantrymen that defended Al-Kout Fortress since the 19th century along with various mounted defensive forces.
