Named after Mahatma Gandhi, it was inaugurated on 25 June 1955 by the first president of India, Rajendra Prasad. By 1956, the college was in financial trouble, and the government of Hyderabad agreed to take it over and develop it. In 1958, the college was moved to Basheerbagh. The old building has since been demolished.
The college was established in 1846 and named the Hyderabad Medical School, during the reign of the 5th Nizam of Hyderabad - Afzal ad-Dawlah, Asaf Jah V.
