It was the first European settlement in what is now the province of Ontario. Eight missionaries from Sainte-Marie were martyred, and were canonized by the Catholic Church in 1930. Sainte-Marie Among the Hurons was designated a National Historic Site of Canada in 1920. [1] [2] A reconstruction of the mission now operates as a living museum.

In April 1971, the daily average resident population was 1 857 ; [ 7 ] : 36 in 1975, the population of 1 812 was composed of 1 216 males and 596 females; [ 9 ] : 46 in 1996, 583 people lived there; and by 2004, fewer than 350 remained.
