The African Saga is a collection of poems by Ugandan poet Susan Nalugwa Kiguli. The Shooting of Dan McGrew, a 1915 novel based on the poem by Marvin Dana; Charlotte MacLeod, writing as Alisa Craig, had one of her characters write a play based on The Shooting of Dan McGrew in her 1988 mystery novel, The Grub-and-Stakers Pinch a Poke. The poem is quoted at the beginning of the book.

"Swing Low, Sweet Chariot" was composed by Willis in what is now Choctaw County, near the County seat of Hugo, Oklahoma around 1840. He may have been inspired by the sight of the Red River, by which he was toiling, which reminded him of the Jordan River and of the Prophet Elijah being taken to heaven by a chariot (2 Kings 2:11).
