A grain filler (pore filler or paste wood filler) is a woodworking product that is used to achieve a smooth-textured wood finish by filling pores in the wood grain. It is used particularly on open grained woods such as oak , mahogany and walnut where building up multiple layers of standard wood finish is ineffective or impractical.

Types of fiberboard (in order of increasing density) include particle board or low-density fiberboard (LDF), medium-density fiberboard (MDF), and hardboard or high-density fiberboard (HDF).
Wood finishing starts with sanding either by hand, typically using a sanding block or power sander, scraping, or planing. Imperfections or nail holes on the surface may be filled using wood putty or pores may be filled using wood filler. Often, the wood's color is changed by staining, bleaching, or any of a number of other techniques.
Pore fillers used for large flat surfaces such as floors or table tops generally contain silica instead of or in addition to wood dust. Pores can also be filled using multiple coats of the final finish rather than a pore filler. [1] [2] The main problem in using putty is matching the colour of the putty to that of the wood.
The use of natural emery papers is rare today generally being replaced with silicon carbide or pure aluminium oxide papers. Emery cloth has the abrasives bonded to a fabric instead of a paper. The cloth is more tear resistant, flexible, and costly. Emery boards have applications similar to emery paper or cloth. It also has a use in modelling.
Hardboard is similar to particle board and medium-density fiberboard, but is denser, stronger and harder because it is made out of exploded wood fibers that have been highly compressed. [ 3 ] The density of hardboard is higher than 500 kg/m 3 (31 lb/cu ft), [ 4 ] usually about 800–1,040 kg/m 3 (50–65 lb/cu ft). [ 5 ]
