Joseph Khalil Aoun (/ aʊ n /; Arabic: جوزاف خليل عون; [a] born 10 January 1964) is a Lebanese politician and army general who has served as the 14th president of Lebanon since 9 January 2025. [1] [2] He previously served as commander of the Lebanese Armed Forces, and is the fifth commander appointed president. [3]
Aoun was born in the Lebanese capital of Beirut.He earned a masters's degree in oriental languages and literature at the Université Saint-Joseph in Beirut in 1975, a Diploma of Advanced Studies in General and Theoretical Linguistics at the University of Paris VIII in 1977, and a PhD in linguistics at Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1981.
