WaterNSW is a New South Wales Government–owned statutory corporation that is responsible for supplying the state's bulk water needs, operating the state's river systems and dams and the bulk water supply system for Greater Sydney and providing licensing and approval services to its customers and water resource information.

Water is no longer drawn from Woodford Dam. In late 2009 Woodford Dam surrounds were opened up to walkers and mountain bikers. [4] Access to the dam wall and lake is still prohibited. Originally envisaged to supply steam trains, Woodford Dam is one of six dams constructed to supply water to the Blue Mountains area.

The dam is located approximately 14 kilometres (8.7 mi) east of the town of Scone on the upper reaches of the river. The dam was built by the New South Wales Water Conservation & Irrigation Commission to supply water for irrigation and flood mitigation. [2] [3] [4] The dam wall height is 100 metres (330 ft) and is 1,125 metres (3,691 ft) long.
There are three key water storage facilities located in the Australian Capital Territory. The fourth source of water for Canberra, Googong Dam, is in NSW. In addition, there are four smaller man-made reservoirs used for recreation and as traps for sediment and fertilizers .
The Avon Dam was the third and the largest of the four water supply dams built as part of the development of the Upper Nepean Water Supply Scheme, one of the most important engineering works and items of public infrastructure in Australia, and is still the second largest of all the NSW water supply dams in terms of storage capacity.
