Third-rail electrification between Hartford, New Britain, and Berlin, a total of 12 mi (20 km) in 1896. This third-rail system was unique; it consisted of an inverted V cross-section rail, mounted on the cross ties between the running rails, and was totally exposed. In 1898, the New Canaan Branch was electrified with 500V DC catenary. [1]
The 184 locomotives carried out a series of test runs on the European rail networks on which they were scheduled to run, gaining approval on SNCB's Belgian 3 kV network in September 1968, SNCF's French 25 kV 50 Hz network in February 1969, [23] and NS's Dutch 1.5 kV network in July 1969; however, on the latter network they never ran.

Porters were a favorite choice among grading contractors, who used light, portable tracks to carry the wooden tipper-cars that were the earthmoving equipment of the day.
A genset uses one to three small diesel engines to provide power. An operator is able to activate each engine as needed, with more than one engine gensets activating one for light work and activating more for heavier work, with excess engines turned off when the extra power is not needed. [1]
British Rail later assigned Class 53 [4] [5] [6] and the running number 1200. While not in any sense a failure, the design was the victim of advances in locomotive technology (specifically, the power obtainable from single medium-speed diesel engines ) and was never duplicated.
