Bedford Hills Correctional Facility for Women, a women's prison in the town of Bedford, New York, [3] is the only maximum security New York State women's prison. The prison previously opened under the name Westfield State Farm in 1901. [4] It lies just outside the hamlet and census-designated place Bedford Hills, New York. [5]
The prison opened in 1877 and was the second prison for women opened in the U.S. Several references note it as the oldest female correctional institution (of those still in operation) in the United States. [3] Its original name was the Sherborn Reformatory for Women, because at the time of its establishment it was located in that town.
The Texas Department of Criminal Justice bought the land and buildings. The facility reopened as a women's prison. [6] The then named Mountain View Unit opened in July 1975. [7] In 2024, the prison was renamed the Patrick O'Daniel Unit following a unanimous vote from the Texas Board of Criminal Justice the previous December. [8]
