Weather pattern of the North American monsoon Typical precipitation pattern of the North American monsoon (green arrow). The North American monsoon is a complex weather process that brings moisture from the Gulf of California (and to lesser extent the eastern Pacific and Gulf of Mexico) over northwestern Mexico and southwestern US resulting in summer thunderstorms, especially at higher elevations.
Of the major monsoon systems, only the North American monsoon is expected to have substantial decreases in total precipitation, with the most likely outcome being a 1%-6% reduction in summer rainfall.
El Paso, in Far West Texas, received 22.4 in (57 cm) of snow during a 24-hour period December 13–14, 1987. [15] For central and southern sections, snowfall is considerably more unusual. In February 1895, a large area of southeastern Texas received over 12 inches (30 cm) of snow, with peak amounts near 30 inches (76 cm) at Port Arthur . [ 16 ]
The 2014 summer season did not yield 100+ degree weather in response to the monsoon-sequel rainfall during late June to August, during a period where the Pacific Coast off Central America was heating up, which evolved into the 2014–16 El Nino event - this cycle was also observed between 1971 and 1976, during post-El Nino intervals.
Today is the official start of monsoon throughout the southwestern U.S. and it will continue through Sept. 30. Hot temperatures are normal during the month of June. Monsoon 2022 begins today [Video]
