The Faraizi movement (Bengali: ফরায়েজি আন্দোলন, romanized: fôrayeji andolon) was a movement led by in Eastern Bengal to give up un-Islamic practices and act upon their duties as Muslims (farāʾiḍ). [1] Founded in 1818, the movement protected the rights of tenants to a great extent.
Faraizi Muḥsin ad-Dīn Aḥmad (1819–1862), better known by his nickname Dudu Miyān , was a leader of the Faraizi Movement in Bengal . He played an active role in the Indian Rebellion of 1857 .
After the death of Haji Shariatullah in 1840, leadership of the Faraizi movement passed to his only son, Muhsinuddin Ahmad popularly known as Dudu Miyan. [ 11 ] Palong thana of Madaripur , a district in the Dhaka Division of Bangladesh, was named Shariatpur District in honor of Haji Shariatullah.
Ahmad was descendant of Haji Shariatullah, founder of Faraizi movement in British Bengal. He was one of two sons of Nizam-e-Islam Party politician Awa Khaled Rashid Uddin Ahmad, member of East Bengal Legislative Assembly, and Mst. Saleha Begum from Dhaka Nawab family. Later he became the leader of Farazi movement. [2]
