In 2019, plans for building the CFISD Visual and Performing Arts Center were made official when a bond for Cypress-Fairbanks ISD was approved on May of that year. The district anticipates that the school will hold 3,000 students. [3] The school's first principal is Chris Hecker; he was hired in that role by the CFISD board in 2015, and he previously was the principal of CFISD's Dean Middle School in Houston. The first graduating class was the Class of 2009. About 140 staff members (including 100 teachers) served about 2,100 students when Cypress Woods opened. The first group of students joined the administration in selecting the school's mascot, Wildcats, prior to the school's opening.
Windfern is located in the former Cypress-Fairbanks Independent School District Administration Building. Students utilize the parking lot of Pridgeon Stadium located directly adjacent to the school. Windfern is an open campus, meaning students are welcome to leave at certain times of the day. Classes start at 7:15 am and last until 4:45 pm.
