SR 117 begins at the Georgia line near the town of Mentone. It winds through slightly mountainous terrain before entering the town of Mentone. This town is among the highest points in the state, at a maximum height of 1,800 feet (550 m). It descends down Lookout Mountain and enters Valley Head, which is at about 1,000-foot (300 m) elevation.
Mentone is located in eastern DeKalb County at (34.572360, -85.580283 It is bordered to the west by the town of Valley Head . The center of town is located on the crest of Lookout Mountain at an elevation of 1,736 feet (529 m).

Starting at the Mississippi state line, US 11, along with US 80, travel northeast toward Cuba. In this location, US 80 turns eastward onto a four-lane divided highway. Continuing on US 11, it intersects SR 17 in York, SR 28 in Livingston (where the University of West Alabama is located), and SR 39 near Epes.
As new sections of I-22 have opened, US 78 has been rerouted onto the new Interstate highway, and the old sections of US 78 have been designated as SR 118, thus extending the highway eastward by nearly 40 miles (64 km).
