Re: What's the best software for accurate framing layout? Jim - Amen. If you want endless, complete 3D flexibility - buy SketchUp, just don't expect it to count studs, layout plywood, or give you construction drawings.
Re: estimating software Tom Hometech is designed to shorten the sales cycle and get remodelers to "yes" more quickly. Timberline is highly programmable, flexible estimating software. Sure there are advantages but if you are using Excel only you are in very good company - 70% of the construction industry.
Currently, the only way I can see to make QB automate the monthly construction loan draw process is to upgrade to Enterprise Edition of QB and buy Crystal Reports. I was thinking with the open database I could automate the draws using Crystal Reports and let it take the information from QB to generate the draw report.
I make my living drawing plans and building projects ranging from custom single family homes to medium sized commercial projects including hotels. The one point that was not mentioned in any of the forum notes in JLC was that SolidBuilder is designed and updated by builders, for builders, and with the input of users who are designers and builders.
I have three working environments: 1. Work which is a 17", 2. Home and I have a 19", and 3. My laptop that has a 15". As more and more companies use electronic plan distribution, software for performing the quantity takeoff onscreen from drawing files is also increasing in popularity. Onscreen takeoff programs allow the user to view a variety of drawing files and electronically measure items using a mouse rather than a scale or digitizer tablet.

You can use cad files or just take a picture with a camera, set scale and use your mouse as a digitizer to do the takeoffs. I believe Mark the Owner was a framing Contractor at one time. This man knows his stuff with both construction and computers. He already has whole house takeoff databases setup. You can change waste, pitch factors very easy.
