Poplar Island is a 3-mile-long (4.8-kilometer-long) island located on the Chesapeake Bay, part of Talbot County, Maryland. In the late 1800s it had a population of 100 living in the town of Valliant but it was abandoned by the 1920s due to erosion of the island. By the 1990s its land mass had dwindled down to a few acres.
Maryland has 281 named islands within its many waters and waterways, including the Atlantic Ocean; the Chesapeake Bay and its many tributary tidal rivers, creeks and bays; as well as within larger whitewater rivers like the upper Potomac.
The district encompasses the village of Deal Island. It includes Deal Island Harbor, still an active marina for fishing boats and an occasional skipjack. The 433-acre (1.75 km 2) district contains 81 buildings and three cemeteries that contribute to its significance. [2] It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2006. [1]
It was taken over by the US Navy in 1919, at which time a landing strip and piers were built and the island's buildings and trees were removed. [13] In 1962, the property was designated as a state park when it was leased from the Federal government and its name reverted to St. Clement's Island. [ 14 ]
Fort Carroll is a 3.4-acre (1.4 ha) artificial island and abandoned hexagonal sea fort in the middle of the Patapsco River, just south of Baltimore, Maryland. It is named for Charles Carroll of Carrollton (1737–1832), a signer of the Declaration of Independence .

The islands are very narrow in many places and one can easily see water, the Chesapeake Bay and the Honga River, on both sides of Maryland Route 335 which travels through the islands. [ 3 ] Upper Hoopers island is located at N. 38°20' W. 76°14 and Middle Hoopers island is located at N. 38°16' W. 76°11.
