ODNR owns and manages more than 640,000 acres (260,000 ha) of land, including 75 state parks, 23 state forests, 136 state nature preserves, and 150 wildlife areas. The department has jurisdiction over more than 61,500 mi (99,000 km) of inland rivers and streams, 451 mi (726 km) of the Ohio River , and 2.29 million acres (9,300 km 2 ) of Lake Erie .
The state park's area is 791 acres (320 ha), while the lake covers 102 acres (41 ha). [2] The name is pronounced with two syllables for "Fork-ed". It fronts on Ohio State Route 124. The park borders the Shade River State Forest, from which it was created in 1951. The dam was created in 1952 when the park was opened to the public. [2]

The region contains nearly 70% of the woodlands in Ohio. At one time this same region was a barren wasteland that had been stripped of its old growth forests to provide fuel for the iron furnaces.
