The British Speedway Under-21 Championship (also known as the British Junior Speedway Championship) is an annual speedway competition open to riders of British nationality aged at least fifteen on the date of the first meeting, and under twenty-one on 1 January in the year of the competition.
The meeting at High Beech on 19 February 1928, a meeting organized by R.J. Hill-Bailey of the Ilford Motor Cycle Club which attracted an estimated 30,000 spectators, is often described as the first British speedway meeting. [1] There were, however, also meetings in 1927 in Camberley in Surrey and Droylsden near Manchester. [2]
Inaugurated in 1961 as a qualifying round of the Speedway World Championship it was open to riders from Britain and the British dominions. [3] It was initially dominated by riders from New Zealand such as Barry Briggs and Ivan Mauger because of the British Final forming part of the World Speedway championship qualifying rounds. [4]
The application was granted and the Yarmouth Bloaters speedway team was created and they joined the National League Division Three. The original plan was to use the name Yarmouth Mariners, but the name was disliked by supporters and the name " Bloaters " was chosen because of the town's connections with the fishing industry.
