Bay Shore Hose Company No. 1 Firehouse, also known as Second Avenue Fire House, is a historic fire station located at Bay Shore in Suffolk County, New York. It was built in 1886 or 1887 and is a 1 + 1 ⁄ 2-story, wood-frame structure with a prominent bell tower. It features a slender hose-drying tower at the rear.
In 1885, Bay Shore Hook & Ladder Company #1 was formed. In 1891, within a few weeks of each other, Penataquit Hose Company #1 and the Bay Shore Hose Company #1 were formed. The three companies were soon merged to form the Bay Shore Fire Department that same year. In 1895, the Bay Shore Fire Patrol Company was formed.
Charles W. Chessar was a New York City restaurateur who was nicknamed "Beefsteak Charlie" by Howard Williams, a sports editor for the New York Morning Telegraph.
