Ash is a young man who travels with various companions, aiming to fulfill his dream to become a Pokémon Master; his Pokémon lineup constantly changes over the course of the series, with its sole constant member being Pikachu, Ash's first Pokémon. Ash is loosely based on Red, the player character from the Generation I games Pokémon Red and Blue.

Both Ash and Volkner defeated Team Rocket with the help of Ash's newly evolved Torterra. Later, Volkner battled Ash in a Gym Battle only to be defeated. Ash's third Gym battle with the electric master Wattson is full of surprises when, after an encounter with a robotic Raikou, Pikachu wins the match alone with super-charged Thunderbolts. However Ash's joy at receiving the badge disappears when Pikachu turns ill, and a depressed Wattson leaves Mauville City convinced he is a weak Gym Leader.
When Professor Elm asks Ash and his friends to pick up a Pokémon egg from a marine research center and deliver it to him, Ash runs into a Lapras herd, with one of the family members being the same Lapras he caught in the Orange Islands. When Team Rocket try to capture the whole herd, it is up to the reunited duo to stop them.
Meanwhile, Ash visits Viridian City and discovers the new gym leader is Agatha of the Elite Four! Scott, a man who conveniently happens to be there, tells Ash about the Battle Frontier, encouraging Ash to enter.
