Chorale melodies are often in Bar form, that is, consisting of a repeated first phrase, called Stollen, and a concluding second phrase. The harmonisation of such a chorale melody may repeat the same harmonisation for both passes of the Stollen, or may present a variant harmonisation on the second pass of the first phrase of the melody.

In 1945, Roger Wagner became the supervisor of young choruses for the City of Los Angeles, most notably the "Los Angeles Concert Youth Chorus." It was from a madrigal group of twelve of these singers that the Roger Wagner Chorale was born in 1946. In 1949, the Chorale won a contract with Capitol Records for whom it recorded over 20 records. The Chorale joined forces with the Phoenix Chorale (then named Phoenix Bach Choir) to make a joint recording, Eternal Rest, released on the Chandos Records label in 2006. The combined choirs released two more albums with Chandos the following year and released a fourth “two choirs” album in March 2015.
